Time Travel Plans

June 5, 2015

Assuming Connie Willis time travel mechanics — can only go back, can only change inconsequentials, universe self-corrects—and assuming working recording devices, here are some things I’d do with a time machine:

  • see a Beetle’s concert
  • attend a medieval feast
  • attend a medieval market day
  • spend a day in the capital of any past civilization in its heyday—Babylon, Memphis, Athens, Knossos, Constantinople, ÇatalhöyükIndus Valley, Beijing, Edo, Chichen Itza, Cusco, Tenochtitlan, Iroquois, Dahomey
  • see a Glenn Miller concert
  • track down some Neanderthals and possibly some Denisovans
  • record as many lost or undeciphered languages as possible, starting with Tocharian and Minoan and ending with indigenous North American ones
  • do some celebrity author and composer spotting — I’d be too shy to say hello, but it would be nice to see Shakespeare, Austen, Chaucer, Wilde, Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi…
  • retrieve any lost documents I can
  • take my friends along for the ride
